Microsoft Mathematics Partnership - Lake Washington School District: Date: August 2007 - June 2010; Presenter: Joyce Frost; Description: Joyce Frost was hired as a math coach for Finn Hill Junior High through the 8 district 20 school 3 year Microsoft Mathematics Partnership Project. She works with teachers at Finn Hill Junior High as well as sixth grade teachers at the 3 feeder elementary schools.
Vertical connections in Mathematics - Skyview High School, Vancouver WA: Date: August 2007; Presenter: Carol Hattan; Description: Elementary through high school teachers will examine activities that make connections across the mathematics curriculum. Teachers will identify the five things they wish their students would enter with and the five things they hope to make sure their students leave with. What will the pattern be?
Project Writer for NCTM Illuminations: Date: School Year 2007-2008; Presenter: Benjamin Sinwell; Description: Wrote several lessons for Illuminations that included notes for teachers. View here and also here.
Methods and Management of Teaching Mathematics - North Carolina: Date: School Year 2007-2008; Presenter: Nancy Ruppert; Description: I wrote and piloted an online course for math teachers as part of a state grant. Twelve lateral entry teachers across the state of North Carolina participated in the course. I also used it for my face-to-face students. My undergraduates gained lots of insight from the teachers who were already teaching. It has been so much fun!
California State Algebra Forum: Date: ongoing; Presenter: Peg Cagle; Description: Invited participant in a statewide collaboration of the California Department of Education, county offices and WestEd to act as expert advisors to state organizations serving districts and schools to improve student learning in Algebra. Currently working on compiling a lexicon for teachers of big ideas in mathematics including how they develop over time k-12 and the appropriate vocabulary to use in teaching them.
Blogs to accompany season 4 NUMB3RS episodes: Date: ongoing; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: I write blogs to accompany the episodes of the CBS-TV series NUMB3RS. In particular, I wrote the ones for episodes #401, #405, and #409.
Moderating the College Board's AP Calculus Electronic Discussion Group: Date: ongoing; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: The AP Calculus EDG is the forum for new AP Calculus teachers to pose questions and for experienced teachers to discuss issues. There are 4000 members and about 150 postings per week.
Teaching with Data using Technology - University of Washington: Date: August 2-3, 2007; Presenters: NWMI - participants; Description: Explore the world of data. Collect real data with technology and simulation. Investigate patterns in data and chance. Make those patterns come to life for your students with the help of the calculator and the software Fathom or Tinker Plots. Data analysis and probability are woven into our everyday lives. The course is designed to strengthen the skills of teachers being asked to ready their students for the WASL standard.
PD^3 & Video Club - Las Cruces, NM: Date: August 4-5, 2007; Presenter: Kelley Butler; Description: I facilitated a mock video club with teachers from Las Cruces as part of their professional development.
Interactive White Boards - Grand Forks School District: Date: Fall 2007; Presenter: Cathy Williams; Description: A series of demonstrations to district faculty on the usefulness of the SmartBoard.
Patterns in Real Data Under Control with the Help of Fathom - Bellvue, WA, Northwest Mathematics Conference: Date: October, 2007; Presenter: Carol Hattan; Description: Patterns in real data become accessible to students when they are able to import data easily, check out the graphs and tables, and do analysis. Function exploration is a snap with Fathom. Extend hands-on simulations by increasing the size of the sample. Learn while having fun.
USA Today All USA Teacher Team: Date: October, 2007; Honoree: Peg Cagle; Description: Peg Cagle was named to the 2007-2008 All USA Teacher Team, one of a 20-person team representing exemplary teachers selected from all disciplines, K-12, in both public and private schools nationwide.
46th Northwest Mathematics Conference: License to Learn - Bellevue, Washington: Date: October 11-13, 2007; Presenters: Joyce Frost and others; Description: Joyce Frost, Joe Frost, and Art Mabbott served as Tri-chairs for the conference. Joyce was also chair of the program committee and Art was chair of the program booklet. Many PCMI participants were speakers at this conference including: Carol Hattan, Gail Burrill, Jim King, Bowen Kearns, Lani Horn, Peg Cagle, Nicole Davis, Kelley Butler, Connie Savoie, Bill Finzer, Bob Stein, and Robin Washam.
NCTM Eastern Regional Conference - Richmond, Virginia: Date: October 11-12, 2007; Presenter: Benjamin Sinwell; Description: Presented a talk entitled "Counting the Trains: Patterns Leading to Recursive Rules."
Parvatiben Muljhibhai Madhvani Girls School - Jinja - Uganda East Africa: Date: October 12, 2007; Presenter: Caroline Taliba; Description: The participants were Secondary school girls of age 15-17 years who were just about to sit their final exams of Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB). My presentation was titled, "How to answer questions in an exam and particular emphasis on Transformations, Construction, and Three Dimensional Geometry." It was such an interactive time for both the students and facilitator. The Geometer's Sketchpad® was supposed to be introduced but there was no electricity that day so they missed out on it.
Beyond Mean, Meadian, and Mode: Integrating Statistical Inquiry into your Mathematics Classroom - California State University, Northridge: Date: October 29, 2007; Presenter: William Thill; Description: How can teachers bring greater authenticity to the data analysis questions found in most traditional textbooks? This presentation introduced teachers to the main differences between statstical questions and mathematical quetions. In addition, teachers learned how to create classroom tasks that help students engage in authentic statistical inquiry. The key recommendations from this presentation come from Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE), published in 2007 by the American Statistical Association. These guidelines are supported by NCTM.
i² - Keepin' it Real: How to Coach a Math Team - Washington: Date: October 29, 2007; Presenters: Joyce Frost, Microsoft Math Coach, Finn Hill Junior High; Description: Joyce Frost and Joe Frost were the featured speakers at the fall dinner of the Puget Sound Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Pilkington College Muguluka - Jinja - Uganda East Africa: Date: October, 2007; Presenter: Caroline Taliba; Description: I was invited to go and talk to the maths teachers at a ssecondary school called Pilkington College Muguluka. My topic of discussion was how problem solving approach can enhance the developing and learning of maths. Aki's presentation of the piece of paper being folded was used and it was such an enriching moment to see how much the Ugandan teachers could do if such a programme came on board.

Putting the Unit Circle in Motion - King of Prussia, PA: Date: November 9, 2007; Presenter: Robert Upton; Description: This was a demonstration of how to use The Geometer's Sketchpad® to derive the graphs of the sine, cosine and tangent functions by animating the unit circle given at PCTM (Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of Mathematics).
TI-Nspire training for Advanced Placement consultants: Date: November 16-17, 2007; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: As a consultant for the College Board, I was invited to participate in this conference to learn more about the CAS TI-Nspire and its uses for AP Statistics. At 2007 PCMI, we used this handheld unit.
Northwest Mathematics Interaction Fall Workshop - John Stanford Center, Seattle Public Schools: Date: November 17, 2007; Presenter: Joyce Frost; Description: Joyce presented on the topic: 3-D puzzles from scratch using 'plane' Geometry and simple Sketchpad. NWMI hosts two school year workshops as a compliment to the week long summer program held every summer on the University of Washington campus.
Northwest Mathematics Interaction Fall Workshop - John Stanford Center, Seattle Public Schools: Date: November 17, 2007; Presenter: Carla Parker; Description: Presented "Centers of Balance: A Weighty Matter". This activity explores finding the centroid of irregular polygons through three methods: plumb line, construction and algebraic calculation.
California Math Council North - Annual Conference - Asilomar, CA: Date: November 30 - December 2, 2007; Presenter: Peg Cagle; Description: Putting the Pieces Together- Exploring Polyhedra with Modular Origami
Joy of Mathematics and The Teachers' Circle - California Mathematics Council - North, Asilomar, California: Date: December 1, 2007; Presenter: Gloria BrownBrooks; Description: A presentation with excerpts from PMET at Bowling Green, The Teachers Circle @ Palo Alto and PCMI Utah. The presentation contained hands-on activities with question and answer follow-up.
Discrete Mathematics Resources book - MAA Notes: Date: March 2008 - February 2011; Presenter: Benjamin Sinwell; Description: I have a project entitled "Using Trains to Model Recurrence Relations" in final review for publication in the Discrete Mathematics Resources book published as part of the MAA notes.
AP Calculus - Using the FRQs in the Classroom: Date: January 15, 2008; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: About 40 participants attended this online workshop sponsored by the College Board. The emphasis was on helping AP teachers to become skilled in preparing students for 'non-traditional' problems which require a genuine understanding of the concepts of calculus. This workshop was archived and is available through the College Board's AP Central website.
Subcommittee on Social Security of the Committee on Ways and Means - Washington, D.C.: Date: January 16, 2008; Invitee: Peg Cagle; Description: Peg Cagle was invited to testify before the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, concerning pending legislation which would repeal provisions of Social Security which punish teachers in 14 states who have earned both Social Security and a teacher's pension.
Teacher's Math Circle - University of Utah: Date: February 4, 2008; Presenter: Troy Jones; Description: The Geometry of Piles of Salt; Investigating and proving the geometry of ridgelines when salt is poured on polygon and circular shapes.
Talk at the 20th annual International Teachers Teaching with Technology Conference - Dallas, Texas: Date: February 29, 2008 - March 2, 2008; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: Navigating Algebra 1 with NUMB3RS. In this talk, I explained how to use the activities developed to accompany the CBS-TV series NUMB3RS with algebra students. I was one of the activity writers during season 3.
Imagine Math Day - Harvey Mudd College: Date: March 1, 2008; Presenters: Darryl Yong, Allen Martin, Pam Mason, Bill Schultheis, Bill Thill, Peg Cagle; Description: Imagine Math is a day of mathematical activities, exploration and inquiry designed for high school mathematics teachers and students. Participants in the 2006 Imagine Math Day explored graph theory and graph complexity; in 2007, we explored non-Euclidean geometries. As this is an election year, we explored the mathematics of voting including a talk specifically for the teachers by Harvey Mudd math professor Michael Orrison. Over 90 secondary school students and math teachers attended.
UCLA Mathematics and Teaching Conference - UCLA: Date: March 2008; Presenter: Allen Martin; Description: Problem Solving in Probability: This presentation will focus on activities and teaching strategies that enable high school students to investigate key topics in Probability and Statistics through problem solving. We will explore independent and dependent events, conditional probability, discrete random variables, scatter plots and Bayes’ Theorem. We will use a variety of approaches and models that include tree diagrams, Venn diagrams, sample spaces, expected values, and simulations. The problem solving style of the workshop will hopefully reflect the spirit of the Park City Math Institute.
NCTM Committe Member - NCTM, Reston, Virginia: Date: March 2008 - February 2011; Presenter: Benjamin Sinwell; Description: Appointed to a 3-year position on NCTM's Mathematics Teacher Editorial Panel.
Ready For Relative Prime Time - North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics Spring Conference: Date: Spring 2008; Presenter: Cathy Williams; Description: A presentation inviting participants to explore the probability that two randomly chosen positive integers are relatively prime.
Microsoft MovieMaker and The Mathematics of Me Project - UNCA and WSSU: Date: Spring 2008; Presenter: Nancy Ruppert; Description: Microsoft MovieMaker and The Mathematics of Me Project: Students at WSSU are predominately black; students from UNCA are predominately white. These diverse candidates interacted with one another via a teleconferece to learn Moviemaker and create files to share with one another. In addition participants shared ideas about teaching mathematics with one another. One of the challenges we are faced as education departments is the NCATE diversity standard. We are in a region of the state that is fairly homogeneous. The math ed professor at WSSU and I have worked together to bring our students together for the past three years. This was a great project.
Institute for Math and Education, University of Arizona Tucson, AZ: Date: March 7-8, 2008; Presenters: Gail Burrill, Peg Cagle, Bowen Kerins, Jim King, Sendhil Revuluri; Description: Symposium highlighting a range of in-service professional development and pre-service preparation programs for secondary math teachers with a focus on programs co-designed or co-taught by mathematician-educator-teacher teams.
Northwest Mathematics Interaction Winter/Spring Workshop - Cascade Christian Junior/Senior High: Date: March 8, 2008; Presenter: Joyce Frost; Description: Math Brochures and Boxes: for Projects and Publicity There are many more ways to present information than a flat sheet of paper. Try tetra-flexagons, folding booklets, and unusual boxes to showcase your program or students' work. Matt Bracher was the local host for the workshop. The workshop was held in his classroom as well as the computer lab.
Los Angeles City Teachers of Math Annual Conference - Los Angeles, CA: Date: March 28-29, 2008; Presenter: Peg Cagle; Description: Addressing the California Algebra I Standards through Inquiry, Questioning & Discourse.
NSF Math/Science Partnership Panels - Arlington, VA: Date: April 24-25, 2008; Reader: Peg Cagle; Description: Peg Cagle served as a reader evaluating proposals for new Targeted Math/Science Partnerships at the invitation of the National Science Foundation.
AP Statistics Reading - Louisville, Kentucky: Date: June 5-11, 2008; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: As a third year reader, John will be learning more about the typical mistakes students make on the AP Stat exam.
NCTM Emerging Issues Committee: Date: June 2008 - June 2011; Presenter: Peg Cagle; Description: Peg Cagle has been appointed to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics' Emerging Issues Committee. The committee's charge is to identify and examine issues that impact the teaching and learning of mathematics and which deserve greater attention.
Utah State Office of Education Math Inservice - St. George, Heber City, Utah: Date: June, August 2008; Presenter: Troy Jones; Description: Focus on Function: Using technology, manipulatives, and investigation of patterns to teach the concept of function. I will be teaching this week-long summer inservice workshop at two locations in Utah this summer.
The 11th International Congress on Mathematics Education - Monterrrey, Mexico: Date: July 6-13, 2008; Presenter: John F. Mahoney; Description: John will be participating in ICME-11 and will focus on issues surrounding the use of technology. He'll report back to participants at PCMI the following week.
