American Diploma Project - math content review panel
Date:2008 - 2009 School year
Panelist: John F. Mahoney
Description: John is one of the two classroom teachers serving on this 24-person panel. Thirty-three states are members of the American Diploma Project. The American Diploma Project benchmarks (2004) define what students should know and be able to do by the end of high school.
PCMI outreach

Description: I miss PCMI. I think it's been about 4 or 5 years now since I last attended (Summer 2004). I haven't done a whole bunch as far as inservice with other teachers. I have shared some things that I learned at PCMI with other teachers individually, however.
I have taught Geometry all but one year since I attended PCMI. Each year that I have taught Geometry I have used the lesson plan we developed at PCMI (The stair-step fractal model building and exploration activity). It seems to be quite a bit more effective than a standard textbook lesson in helping students understand how changing lengths of the edges of a polyhedron affects the 1, 2, and 3-dimensional measures differently. Not only do they learn more, but it tends to be one of the favorite activities of the year for students.
I use tetrahedron kites differently than I did before PCMI. I took a few minutes talking about tetrahedral numbers at a math inservice meeting.
I encourage my fellow math teachers at school to take advantage of the PCMI opportunity. Those who know I went know I loved it. Those that don't know are new and since I am currently with the world languages department I don't go to the math dept meetings.
I did present a session at a state math teachers conference on a coordinate grid game, thanks to an invite from Lars Nordfelt, whom I know from PCMI. Although the ideas were not something I learned at PCMI, I never would have presented them had I not been to PCMI.

California State Algebra Forum

Description: Invited participant in a statewide collaboration of the California Department of Education, county offices and WestEd to act as expert advisors to state organizations serving districts and schools to improve student learning in Algebra, including a 2 day meeting focussed on laying the groundwork in the early grades for success in secondary algebra courses.
Bill Nye the Science Guy's "Solving for X"

Description: Peg Cagle is the math consultant for Bill Nye the Science Guy's new project "Solving for X' which will produce a series of webisodes covering key curriculum from middle school mathematics through Algebra I. The webisodes will also be available on DVD and will be supported with activities and tips for teachers via a website being created by Disney Educational Productions.

Description: At our local math conference, I presented information on PCMI, my experience, and some of the ideas that I have brought back and used in my classroom. The presentation was well received and several of the teachers have applied for next summer session. I am hoping to start a professional development group here. I have also shared within my school many of the ideas from my PCMI experience and several teachers are implementing the ideas as well. I am also extending the project from my working group to an action research project that will be submitted to the county office for review.
Pizza and Problem Solving Luncheon

Description: My school let me plan and implement a Pizza and Problem Solving Luncheon for all the middle and high school math teachers in which I was able to share my PCMI experience. We worked through a problem set so they could see what our morning session was like and I was able to share with my fellow mathematic teachers many of the algebraic and analytic geometry ideas from the various lectures and workshops.

Description: Participants worked their way through a series of constructions that produced the Catalan numbers. The constructions were used to introduce bijections and as a lead in to the formula for producing Catalan numbers.

McAllen PD3 Mathematics Fair

Description: The 2008 PCMI participants from McAllen -- together with past PCMI participants -- shared their working group projects with staff and faculty from McAllen ISD. New perspectives and discussions were shared by all participants. Judi Carlin also led a presentation of her Algebra 1 Summer transitional program. Dr. Roger Knobel (UTPA), Judi Carlin and Julie Acosta (McAllen ISD) facilitated the session.

California Teacher Advisory Council

Description: Peg Cagle has been appointed as one of 12 members of the California Teacher Advisory Council (CAL TAC). Modeled on the National Teacher Advisory Council, CAL TAC seeks to disseminate public policy information from the state level to teachers, hold forums with members of the business community and provide feedback to and from the National Academies Teacher Advisory Council.

Conic Section by Paper Folding and Using the Nspire

Description: We folded the parabola, ellipse, and hyperbola using patty paper. And then we reproduced the same using the TI-Nspires and actually justified where the points of the conics were on the fold (tangent) lines. I did my first presentation at a T3 International Conference. I had arranged to be observed and convinced them to invite me to join the ranks of other PCMI'ers who are regional T3 instructors. Some of our folks are even National or International Instructors. There were a lot of other PCMI alumni who presented as well: Gail Burrill, Steve Phelps, Beverly Farahani, Bill Finzer, Richard Parr, and Suzanne Alejandre.

GeoGebra Workshop
