Physics in the Mathematics Curriculum

Every participant in the High School Teacher Program is a member of a Working Group. The Working Groups meet for 2 hours during 4 afternoons a week.

Over a 1-3 year period, the working groups will:

  • Review and critique some existing materials and activities for the selected topic in the secondary curriculum;
  • Prepare and pilot some units or activities or materials, together with the associated mathematics;
  • Produce something, such as a set of activities, a record of teaching experiments, discussion problems for the Web, or other math materials for eventual publication in print or on the Web.

Each Working Group will be composed of several teacher-participants and a working group Coordinator. One of the senior participants is designated as Assistant Coordinator. In addition other mathematicians and educators at PCMI may take part in the Working Group as resource personnel or interested parties.

There are many ways for teachers to participate in the working groups, and each participant is encouraged to operate in their area of expertise, e.g. writing, presenting, creating, etc.

Resource personnel for the various groups include: Robert Stein (California State University at San Bernardino), Al Cuoco (Education Development Center), Suzanne Alejandre (The Math Forum @ Drexel), Sheldon Berman (The Math Coach), Roger Verhey (University of Michigan-Dearborn), Brian Hopkins (Saint Peter's College), and representatives from the PCMI Research, Undergraduate Faculty, and Math Education Research Programs.
