Japanese Lesson Study Summary

Monday, July 1, 2002

What we did:
  • Introduction of group members and "how do you plan a lesson."
  • Powerpoint introduction of key components of lesson study.
  • Watching video on a Japanese Lesson Study.
  • Discussed video.
Highlights of Discussion
  • Participating in Lesson Study would help you "develop the eyes" to see children (whether you teach or observe).
  • It is also a way to give and receive critical feedback (our culture does always welcome this).
  • The number of individuals observing a lesson study can be VERY large in Japan.
Resources
  • A lesson is like a swiftly flowing river by Catherine C. Lewis and Ineko Tsuchida, from American Educator
  • "Lesson study in elementary school mathematics in Japan: A Case Study" by Makoto Yoshida (A paper presented at the Americal Educational Research Association 1999 Annual Meeting)
