We made our own Smartboard! You can, too!

Here are some picture-based instructions to use.

You'll need the following software:

PC: Johnny Chung's Wiimote Whiteboard (about 1/2 way down page) http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~johnny/projects/wii/
Mac: http://www.uweschmidt.org/wiimote-whiteboard

First, make your pen! Your first one will take about an hour. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing how to piece it together but the schematic below is as simple as it gets.
Note: You may be able to buy one here: http://www.infraredpens.com/ or on eBay.

After making or buying a pen, connect your Wii controller to your laptop using Bluetooth.
Note: PCs with XP and Macs seem the easiest ... Vista not so much.

Run your Wiimote Whiteboard software and go through the calibration process. You will want to be projecting on a reflective surface... a whiteboard is best but we have made it work on a light coloured wall.
