A concrete model for integer subtraction
"At the annual NCTM meeting in Denver this spring I attended a workshop on integer computation. The presenters shared several different ideas for helping students gain an understanding of computing with integers. I took one of the ideas back to my team, and we used it with quite a bit of success. This model relates floats and anchors to positive and negative numbers, and encourages students to think about what happens to a ship that is floating at a certain level if anchors are removed (subtracting negatives), floats are removed (subtracting positives) or anchors and floats are added to the ship. I would be happy to send the materials for this activity, if you will send me an email... genglert at cox.net"

A New Angle on Constructions
In this project, students had to work in groups and design methods for creating various geometric constructions after learning how to copy and bisect line segments and angles. We spent a day introducing the basic constructions by having a video of me doing the constructions playing in a loop; so that I and my student teacher could help students individually. Some students did not know how to hold or move a compass. download Peter's MS Word document.
