Japanese Lesson Study

Friday, July 13

We watched a video in which Catherine Lewis described goal setting in the lesson-study process.

We discussed goals:

  • Students focusing for more than 30 seconds
  • Respect for each other's ideas
  • Willingness to help
  • Persistence
  • Willingness to conjecture
  • Independent thinkers
  • Communicate, reason, connect, change representations
  • Think mathematically

And discussed what characteristics we want in a topic:

A topic which will make the students think about:

  • Patterns and relationships
  • Abstraction/justification
  • Communication

Tom presented some of his research on Japanese and American calculus students.
