Discrete Mathematics Summary

Monday - Friday, July 4 - 8, 2005

During the week, the group continued to attend the Allman/Rhodes course during the first hour. Today, the group worked on homework problems during the second hour.

Day 7
Elizabeth Allman, one of the lecturers, met with us during the second hour and went over a couple of problems in detail with us.

Day 8
During the second hour we discussed possible projects. These included

  • Creating a resource guide for teachers connecting mathematics and biology
  • Creating an activity based on mutations of some of the letters of a paragraph - using software.
  • Creating a lesson based on basic phylogenetic trees - without software.
  • Creating an activity based on other parts of the Allman/Rhodes book
  • Doing something with probability and biology
  • Doing something with difference equations

Day 9
During the second hour we split up into groups to work on projects

  • Two of us will be working on creating a resource guide for teachers connecting mathematics and biology
  • Six of us will be taking ideas from the course and creating lessons that emphasize concepts with some relatively easy examples – that don’t require sophisticated technology.
  • Three of us will be taking ideas from the course and creating lessons that emphasize concepts with some examples that are enhanced with technology.
