Discrete Mathematics Summary

Monday - Friday, July 11 - 15, 2005

We spent the week working on our projects. Some members continued to attend the Phylogenetics class for the first hour and then joined the rest of us for the second hour.

Our projects were:

Annotated Bibliography of Phylogenetics
Allen Martin and Cathy Williams

A list of articles, books, and web resources for teachers to learn about applications of discrete mathematics to biology and ways to help them incorporate material into the classroom.

Bundle of Phylogenetics Lesson Plans
Ruth Brocklebank, Tandy Del Vecchio, Dan McGuire, Connie Savoie, Gene Shiau, William Thill, Tristen Voget, and Jeff Willets

This collection includes a glossary of biology terms and several lessons using ideas of phylogenetics for various high school mathematics courses, including calculator programs and free software available through the Web.

On Friday, Brian introduced our group and talked about the undergraduate class that we attended. He thanked our teachers: Elizabeth Allman and John Rhodes who were in the room during our presentation. Dan explained what phlogeny is and gave a number of examples. Allen described the welter of resources that he and Cathy found and are included in their project. Bill described the various lesson plans that the group produced.
