Exploring Discrete Mathematics Summary

Monday - Friday, June 29 - July 3, 2009

The goal of the Discrete Mathematics Working Group is to develop a reservoir of "good" counting questions that look at a variety of situations and solution methods, where the reader will be assisted in interpreting the question, forming a "picture," deciding on a technique and seeing the full, worked solution. We will also attempt to make connections between problems, and see how problems can be extended into more complex problems. These questions will eventually be incorporated into a type of game.

We spent this week getting to know each other, talking about our experiences with Discrete Mathematics, sharing our expectations for the working group and brainstorming ideas for an outcome. We each then brought in 3-6 problems, and have spent the remainder of the week getting the problems into google documents along with their solutions.

Week #2 we will begin to share our problems with others, checking solutions and polishing them up. We may also investigate the use of video clips in presenting solutions.

We look forward to creating a useful and challenging resource for the discrete mathematics community.
