| Investigating Geometry SummaryMonday - Friday, June 28 - July 2, 2010The geometry working group began the week by broadening their view of tools to use in order to introduce new material as well as to deepen existing geometric content. They started by spending a day looking at Sketchpad 5. Since this is a relatively recent release, most of the participants were not yet familiar with the new features, though many had worked with previous versions. The following day was spent on an exploration of Zometools, building and investigating various Platonic and Archimedean polyhedra, along with a discussion of higher dimensional polytopes. Finally a day was spent looking at three possible uses for paper-folding within the geometry classroom; constructions through folding, explorations through folding and building through folding. Participants used folding of a circle to construct and ellipse, explored Haga's Theorem through repeated folding of a single square, and created a six-piece cube using origami to build with Sonobe units.
