The Lesson Study working group conducted a Japanese-style lesson study in 2½-weeks of close collaboration. We taught our public lesson to Algebra 2 students from the Winter Sports High School in Park City. That class was starting a unit on systems of equations, so we chose to teach a lesson concerning the conceptual underpinnings of solving any system of equations. Our lesson aim was to first assess student understanding of the concept of a solution to an equation, and then develop their concept of a solution to a system of equations. An additional goal was for students to begin to develop at least one method to represent and solve a system of linear equations systematically (an algebraic, graphical, or tabular method). We worked together to improve our practice incorporating group-worthy tasks, student accountability for their learning, and reasoning-based class discussions into the lesson.
