- The Dartboard Activity: Making Connections in Geometry and Probability
- Katherine Lin* and David Thomas
- This is a project designed to cover Common Core Standards in both Geometry and Statistics & Probability. Students will analyze probability, statistics, and area problems using a dartboard. Specifically, students will calculate the area of circles, sectors, and rings of annuluses; conduct an experiment with the dartboard; find the probability of hitting specific regions; and calculate the expected value of the point distribution of a dartboard. This project also covers learning objectives in Texas, as Texas has yet to adopt the Common Core Standards.

- A Common Core Crash Course: Data and Statistics
- Marina Isakowitz* and Leonard Carapezza
- As states begin to adopt the Common Core mathematics standards, many
teachers are finding that they must teach new and unfamiliar
statistics concepts. The Common Core is being rolled out differently
in different states, and some teachers may find that they are being
expected to teach material that presupposes statistical knowledge with
which their students are not actually familiar. This project is
intended to serve as crash course in data and statistics that covers
many of the the middle and high school common core statistics
standards. It is intended to be used over the course of 2-3 days. This
project is not intended to to cover all of the statistics concepts,
but rather to cover the major statistical concepts and provide a basic
foundation for students to continue to grow in their understanding of
statistical analysis.

- NYS Integrated Algebra Statistics with a Cup Stacking Project
- George Ludovici
- The objective of this project is to address the statistical components of the NYS Integrated Algebra Regents level course with accommodations for anticipated impact of the Common Core Standards. Minimal prior knowledge is assumed. Students are shown examples, questions are asked and then students use the results of their own Cup Stacking activity to create statistical representations. Topics covered include: Frequency Histogram, Cumulative Frequency Histogram, Quartiles, Box and Whiskers, Scatter Plot, Line of Best Fit and correlation.

- Does practice really help you get better?
Using simulation to create data that can be analyzed
- Jason Lang and Barbara Lynch
- Students will conduct a novel, simple experiment and produce a set of data to be analyzed following guidelines per the GAISE report. Students will formulate questions, collect and analyze data, and interpret the results, with each of those steps being discussed in this article as how they can be viewed through the lenses of different GAISE levels, with sample lesson plans and activities provided. This experiment and its subsequent analyses are also aligned to the Common Core State Standards.
