Additionally, for students to truly see themselves as mathematicians, they need authentic public spaces to create and share original mathematics that can draw interest and validation from the larger community. This presentation will provide a case study of an adapted 6th grade Statistics Unit on school gun violence and Poster Competition project where students developed, researched, and presented on their own statistical question around an important social issue. The presentation will also provide a framework teachers can use to adapt their curriculum units to help students make sense mathematically of emergent social issues and see themselves as agents in mathematics and social change. download zipped folder ChadRobertsonSJM.zip [generic login required] Social Justice & Middle School Math Grade Level(s): 6thSubject: 6th Grade MathAuthor: Julie Wright [@julierwright] Many teachers want our students to use math to explore social justice issues and propose solutions. Doing so enhances their mathematical and other identities and gives them agency and motivation in our classrooms. However, it can be quite difficult for teachers to develop tasks around social justice that are suited to students’ individual interests, local issues, or timely concerns and also meet the math goals for the class. Building on my PCMI work from 2017, I have built an app to help middle school math teachers choose tasks, or give students a framework to choose tasks, that fit particular Common Core math standards, and I will talk this summer and fall at conferences (including the NCTM Regional Conference in Seattle) on this work and how my students used math to explore their world. LinksSocial Justice Middle School Math App link: https://tinyurl.com/SJMapp
