- Online Course
- Geometry Transformed!
- This five-week course was offered November 7 through December 5, 2017. There was no charge for the course. It is for teachers who want to deepen their understanding of transformations in plane geometry and who seek examples of how rigid motions and dilations and their combinations can be presented in the classroom. The aims for the online course for teachers include these:
- Insight into the "big picture" and value of basing geometry concepts such as congruence on transformations, as prescribed in the Common Core.
- Hands-on, detailed exploration of rigid motions and dilations in the plane and their compositions.
- Practice with examples of proofs using transformations.
- Consideration of the role of coordinates.
- Participants in this course met in an online classroom for five consecutive Tuesday sessions of 90 minutes, starting November 7 and ending December 5. The starting time for each session was 8:30 PM Eastern Time (so 7:30 Central, 6:30 Mountain, 5:30 Pacific). Preceding each class, participants were expected to spend a couple of hours working assigned problems and participating in online discussions and reflections. These problems and exchanges were designed to push one's thinking and generate discussion for the upcoming class.
